Do you know the difference between Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation? This blog will explain the difference in Detail and provide examples.

This blog will discuss Physical therapy and Rehabilitation in detail. Most people do not know the difference between physical therapy and Rehabilitation. They mix them. Physical Rehabilitation is like an umbrella and physical therapy falls under this umbrella.

Physical Rehabilitees

Rehabilitation is the process of helping someone recover from an injury, illness, or surgery. It includes different treatments to help a person get back to their everyday life. It might involve not just physical recovery but also emotional and mental support.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is a specific part of rehabilitation that focuses on improving movement, strength, and flexibility. A physical therapist will guide you through exercises and stretches to help your body heal.

 It covers the following areas.

  • Joints
  • Muscles
  • Tendons
  • Ligament
  • Bones
  • Spinal cord
  • Nervous system (brain)

Rehabilitation can improve not only the physical aspect of your well-being but also your mental and cognitive state. It should also be noted that treatments may differ by age, especially with pediatric and geriatric therapy.

Let’s discuss the three basic types of Rehabilitation; it covers three types of therapies.

  • Physical
  • Occupational
  • Speech and Language

Next, we’ll explore each of these types in detail, starting with Physical Therapy.

1st Type Physical Therapy

Physical therapy, also known as PT, is the treatment of injury with physical techniques that comprise exercise, cold and heat treatments, massage, and stretching. PT can be practiced in three places

  1. in a hospital,
  2. an outpatient clinic
  3. at home.

It tackles the following terms

  1. arthritis
  2. joint replacement
  3. sports injury
  4. knee pain
  5. back pain
  6. carpal tunnel syndrome

2nd type of Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy, also called OT, is similar to physical therapy, but the difference is it focuses more on helping you become self-governing in performing accomplishments of daily life ADL. These activities are the following

  1. brushing your teeth
  2. getting dressed
  3. simply getting out of bed

In simple words, each session is modified to normal living behaviors. PT and OT are different. PT focuses on improving your body’s functionality; however, OT focuses on the actual activity that you need or want to perform every day.

3rd type Speech and Language Therapy

Speech therapy emphasizes the enhancement of language, communication, swallowing, and fluency.

Symptoms of Dysphagia

In this disease, the patient cannot swallow food properly; he feels difficulty while eating.

Reasons

  • a stroke
  • multiple sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Cancer

Affect

  1. tongue
  2. mouth
  3. throat

In dysphasia, the person cannot speak fluently. The terms aphasia and dysphasia are used interchangeably.

Comparison of Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy

The purpose of both is recovery, but the methodology is different. Rehabilitation assists the affected person in recovering from the injury and helps them resume strength and mobility. However, physical therapy uses exercises to improve a patient’s motion. Meanwhile, rehabilitation deals with the severe conditions of stroke, nervous system defects, and other unadorned conditions.

Explanation of Physical Therapy

Additionally, Physical therapy helps people recover from chronic back pain and compensate for neurological disorders, including sclerosis. Physical therapy is a part of Rehabilitation. In physical therapy, the therapist uses PT sessions. The PT’s work is to regain independence and mobility and recover from everyday activities, which include walking and sitting without any difficulty.

Rehabilitation is a Flexible Term

Rehabilitation programs are usually flexible. They can be accomplished on a casualty basis while the patient lives at home. These programs generally involve PT and professional therapy, as well as other types of high-quality care, such as speech therapy and social work.
Rehabilitation, a process that goes beyond physical recovery, is about restoring function and enhancing the quality of life after an injury or illness. It’s crucial to recognize that this process also addresses psychological and emotional aspects, making it a truly holistic approach to care.

ReHab

This term is used for surgery treatment that cannot be reversed. It is also used when the treatment plan is not short. Rehabilitation is a progression of learning something new, cultivating physical health, and recovering from an injury.

Consequently, they might prefer starching. Yoga’s purpose is to resume mobility. The physical therapist used the following equipment to help with the recovery.

  • Resistance band
  • Treadmills

Rehabilitating anything means carrying it back to its innovative state.

Final words

Do you know the difference between Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation? Physical therapy and Rehabilitation are two different terms. Physical therapy tackles the specific part of a body, just like the nuts and bolts; consequently, rehabilitation deals with the whole body, like a car. Both are very important because they help people recover.
